NO matter that the cartoonists tend to pen him as a dour, long-suffering sulker. As it happens, Peter Costello is actually something of a scamp.

On Tuesday, the Treasurer joked his way through interviews to mark the big Five O. After being handed a chocolate cake during a live cross with the Today show, he quipped to the studio crew: "Hey, turn on your cameras and I'll explain the GST on cake!" an impish dig at former Liberal leader John Hewson.

He also threatened to do Elvis-like gyrations, cast himself as a romantic hero in a Danielle Steel novel and made a birthday wish for a day off. And there was mention of the fact that he had asked Prime Minister John Howard to his birthday drinks for a "strong lemon squash".
