AUSTRALIA'S finest cartoonists and editorial illustrators are heading to Wollongong this weekend for their annual awards ceremony.

The Australian Cartoonists' Association (ACA) will recognise its most celebrated scribblers in a range of categories, before handing out the coveted Gold Stanley for Cartoonist Of The Year. A ceremony will be held at Rydges, Wollongong tomorrow night. ACA President Peter Broelman said this year's nominees mined a rich seam of political satire.

"Most of them this year are editorial cartoonists - maybe it's because there's an election looming," he said.

Cartoonists are often afforded greater licence than other commentators - the satirical tone of their work allowing them to express taboos and push boundaries.

"The power of the pen or the brush allows cartoonists to cut to the chase," Mr Broelman said.

"You can imply that a politician is dubious or devious or corrupt, but you might not be able to write it."
