TWO Sun-Herald cartoonists have been recognised in a prestigious competition for cartoons.

At the Rotary Cartoon Awards, presented in Coffs Harbour last week, editorial pages artist David Rowe picked up cartoon of the year for a piece depicting an old lady tattooing a bikie. He also won the best caricature award.

Cartoonist David Pope won best political cartoon for an image of Iraqi president Ghazi al-Yawar and John Howard in the back of a car driven by the US Administration.

Contest judge Leigh Summers said some entries were well drawn but not witty, or vice versa.

"Clever remarks were undermined by ill-drawn subject matter, but with the winners there was sparkling wit and creative expertise," she said.

Pope said the win was "excellent news".
