ONE of Australia's most prestigious cartoon awards has been won by Herald cartoonist Peter Lewis.
Lewis was awarded the Cartoon of the Year prize at the Rotary National Cartoon Awards in Coffs Harbour on Saturday night.
His cartoon of Osama bin Laden, which was published just days after the September 11 tragedy, was chosen over 400 other entries to claim the top prize.
Cartoonists from all over the world entered the competition, which has been running for 14 years.
It was started by the Rotary Club of Coffs Harbour City.
Lewis said it was an honour to win the award on the eve of the first anniversary of the terrorist attack.
`All cartoons don't have to be funny and I wanted it to invoke the same sense of horror I felt watching the buildings burn,' he said.
Lewis previously won the award in 1994. Lewis' gallery, Page 8
