IT WAS a tough job but someone had to do it ... and after the smirks, giggles and belly laughs died down, the judges of Chuckletoon delivered the names of their top three cartoonists.

The winner ($300 cash and $200 worth of arts supplies from Eckersley's store in Cooks Hill) is Rick Sheather, of Edgeworth, a barman at Western Suburbs Leagues Club whose portrayal of John Howard ? or was that a juggling clown on a unicycle? ? was featured on this page a couple of weeks ago.

Second place ($100 worth of arts supplies) goes to Jason Starrett, of Valentine, for a clever and quirky, if somewhat despairing, line drawing, while third place ($50 in art supplies) goes to Phil Shea, of Redhead, for his detailed illustration of The Elephant's Trophy Room ? we especially like the mouse!

The Word's Chuckletoon cartooning competition, run in conjunction with Chucklefest, Newcastle's inaugural comedy festival, attracted more than 70 entries from people as diverse as their obvious imaginations and drawing styles.

There was a 12-year-old boy, a 63-year-old retired teacher, entrants from as far as Tamworth and Moss Vale, those with years of training and experience under their belts and rank first-timers ... the judges definitely found their task a tricky one.

Readers could soon see for themselves the difficulty the judges faced. Chucklefest organiser Richard Howard is planning an exhibition of entries in a local gallery. Stay tuned to The Word for details.
